Artist Statement

In creating visual images, I depend on momentary inspiration. I let shapes and colors explore deep thought, as a choreographer explores complex thought through dance composition. Improvised movement of impersonated shape suggests symbols and patterns reflective of human emotion and relationships. I layer thin pigments, creating reminders that our human experience is layered.

I like to place imaginary figures or shapes on canvas, but I often erase them when they become too realistic. I sometimes feel that recognition restricts or limits expression. On the other hand, without linkage between the imaginary and the realistic, I feel unfocused, my intentions faint and unformed. I want to come and go, to travel between.

Finding space between, and knowing the realistic that melts into my psychological being, is important in creating meaningful images. I want my inner life to associate with my daily life in the images I create. Finding contact between of those two spaces, between the embodied and the abstract, helps formulate thought and crystallize vision.
