ARTIST STATEMENT

My work has always revolved around paper. Initially I worked in a traditional way with watercolor. My

work evolved into paintings consisting of torn, painted papers and then to painted, paper sculpture.

During the fall of 1976, I began making my own paper pieces at Joe Wilfer's Upper U.S. Papermill in Oregon, Wisconsin. I started my own papermaking facility in 1980 when Joe moved to New York.

In molding the paper to my needs, I take into account size, thickness, shape, texture, color, then I use embossment of images to tell a story. When the pieces are pressed and dry, I use a brush to apply acrylics and then oil pastel, pastel and water-based paints to heighten the images. This way of working allows complete control of the process from beginning to end and can be exhilarating and magical.

Recent pieces used a reference to kite forms in combination with ideas that arose from a recent trip to Japan. Then, landscape took a strong lead with references to piers, boats and fish. Contemplating a move to Ashland, Oregon, I began two series: "Windows" which look out onto landscapes and "House with a View" also looking out to landscapes. My most recent series is "Mountains and Beyond" with references to Alaska, Utah and Oregon.
