CATHY VALENTINE

Cathy Valentine maximizes the capacity of encaustic to allow lines and colors to float as if suddenly suspended in time. She builds up multiple layers of wax while drawing, staining and/or carving each layer to create a depth of transparency. Her work is abstract in nature, with a sense of randomness; a type of emotional landscape or internal language. Often she borrows the lines and shapes of nature as well as her older work of sculptural basket shapes. Cathy’s use of encaustic combines many disciplines, collage, printmaking imagery and sculptural qualities are seen in the final result. Her work speaks of time, life, and nature.

Cathy was born and raised in Southern California but has been living in Mt. Shasta for many years. Her interest in art began when she had her first child, realizing that she had an unfulfilled creative need. Cathy is largely self taught and has utilized different workshops to broaden her scope. Her art has taken many forms, first as a weaver and textile artist. She has studied with Ferne Jacobs, well known sculptural textile artist, and has pursued a path of that form for a number of years. Eventually Cathy turned to painting, first with acrylic, then for the past 14 years, working with encaustic.
